Can I Transfer Windows 11 to a New PC After Activation?

I'm planning to buy Windows 11, but it seems like the local shops will take a few days to get a physical copy. I'm considering getting it directly from the Microsoft Store instead. However, I'm confused about how the activation works. Does Windows 11 link to my PC's hardware, or is it tied to my Microsoft account? If I reset my PC, will I still have access to it? And if I decide to change PCs, can I transfer it to the new one? Is transferring difficult, or might I need technical help? Should I just wait for the physical copy or go for the digital one now?

Yes, when you buy Windows 11, it actually links to both your motherboard and your Microsoft account. If you plan to keep your current motherboard, make sure to remove the key before switching anything around. This way, you won’t run into issues with activation later.

What would I use the motherboard for?

The activation process is pretty much all about your Microsoft email account. When you move to a new PC, just make sure to remove the old installation first. As for activation after a reset, no problem there either; you can reactivate it as long as you're using the same Microsoft account.

Does that mean it attaches itself to the email and gets removed from the PC to activate on a different one?

You'll need a serial key for activation. Once you have it, just click the 'activate Windows' link, usually found at the bottom of the install window. If you're installing offline, you can activate it through the Settings menu by changing your activation key.

Does it work the same for laptops?

You can install Windows 11 on another PC. Just log in with the same Microsoft account during installation, and it will activate. It’s pretty straightforward once you get going!

How is the activation done? Like, what exactly should I do after buying it?

Don’t stress too much about it being tied to hardware. It’s actually linked to your Microsoft account. If you need to swap out your motherboard (say it fails), you can still activate Windows on your new setup with the same key. So you shouldn't have to worry if you need to make any changes or updates to your system.

If I get a new PC, will it still activate?
