5800X3D Upgrade Caused No POST and Possible CPU Socket Damage

I replaced my Ryzen 5 5600X with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D in an MSI B550-A Pro. The motherboard was already updated to its latest BIOS, and the new processor appeared to seat normally. However, the system would not POST after the upgrade, even though all the fans spun. I reinstalled the 5600X, but the system still would not boot.

Photos appear to show burn or melting marks on the 5800X3D and in two areas of the motherboard's CPU socket. I had already tried clearing CMOS, reseating the RAM, checking all power connections, and testing HDMI instead of DisplayPort before returning the 5800X3D. The 5600X does not appear to have obvious damage. I'm trying to determine whether this was caused by a defective processor, a motherboard failure, incorrect BIOS settings, or something I did during installation.

The socket and the 5800X3D both appear to have heat or burn damage in the photos. Since the system also failed with the original 5600X afterward, the motherboard may have been damaged as well. I would stop testing CPUs in that board and pursue an RMA or have both parts inspected professionally.

That’s what worries me. The 5600X looks mostly normal, so I’m still unsure whether the board damaged the new CPU or the CPU caused the socket problem.

Clearing CMOS and reseating the RAM were the right basic troubleshooting steps, but visible damage changes the situation. Check the socket closely for discolored contacts, debris, bent pins, or damage around the power-delivery area, and avoid powering the board again if anything looks scorched. The safest next step is an RMA or diagnostic inspection for both the motherboard and processor.

Someone else reported a similar no-boot situation where the board showed strange voltage behavior after a BIOS reset, although their CPU was not installed and avoided damage. It’s possible there was a motherboard or firmware-related power problem, but there isn’t enough evidence to identify the exact cause from the symptoms alone.

A BIOS or voltage-setting issue is worth considering, especially since boost-overdrive and a negative all-core voltage offset had been enabled previously. However, software settings alone usually don’t explain visible melting or burn marks. The socket damage should be treated as a hardware failure until proven otherwise.

I had used boost overdrive and a -20 all-core voltage offset with the 5600X, but no fixed manual overclock. I’m wondering whether those settings somehow carried over and caused abnormal voltage during the first boot.
