I'm upgrading from 1080p and want to make good use of my MSI MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50, which supports 1440p at 500Hz. I mainly play competitive titles like CS2 and Overwatch, but I also play demanding games such as Escape from Tarkov and Cyberpunk 2077. I'm considering an RX 9070 XT for about AUD $1,200 or an RTX 5080 for roughly AUD $2,200. I'll be pairing the GPU with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and often play competitive games at 4:3 resolution. Is the RTX 5080 worth paying around $1,000 more, and which card would be the better choice for reaching very high frame rates?

For CS2 specifically, NVIDIA cards can sometimes have an advantage, while the 9070 XT performs very well in games such as Warzone and other rasterized titles. The RTX 5080 is the stronger overall card, but whether it’s worth the price depends on how much you value ray tracing, upscaling features, and the highest possible performance.
The RX 9070 XT is probably the better value in Australia. The RTX 5080 is faster, especially if you care about ray tracing or NVIDIA-specific features, but it’s difficult to justify an extra AUD $1,000 for the performance increase. For competitive games, the 9070 XT should deliver excellent frame rates.
A 1440p 500Hz monitor doesn’t mean every game needs to run at 500 FPS. Competitive players often use a lower 4:3 resolution to make high frame rates easier, but the CPU still has to keep feeding frames consistently. The 7800X3D is a strong choice and should pair well with either GPU, though dips below 500 FPS in busy scenes are still normal.
A constant 500 FPS in every game is unlikely. CS2 and Overwatch may get close with the right settings, but games like Tarkov and Cyberpunk will be much more demanding. Your CPU and the specific map or scene can also cause frame rates to dip well below the average.
That makes sense. I’m mainly trying to maximize competitive-game performance, so I’m not sure the extra cost is worthwhile.
