While I was asleep, a pipe leaked onto the floor near my PC. The water did not appear to fall directly onto the computer or enter through the top, but the bottom of the case was sitting near a small wet area—probably only a couple of teaspoons of water. I didn't realize the leak had reached the PC until I turned it on. It began loading, entered repair mode, and then shut down. I've now disconnected all cables, checked inside the case, and dried the visible moisture. It has been sitting for several hours. What should I do before attempting to power it on again, and is it likely that the water caused permanent damage?

The fact that the water didn’t land on top doesn’t guarantee the inside stayed dry. Moisture can travel through the bottom vents or reach the power supply and motherboard indirectly. After it has thoroughly dried, inspect for damp spots, residue, or corrosion before testing it. If it still won’t start, have a technician check the power supply and other components rather than repeatedly trying to turn it on.
Don’t try powering it on again yet. Even a tiny amount of water can short the wrong component, especially if it entered through vents on the bottom. Leave the PC completely unplugged, open the case, and let it dry in a warm, well-ventilated place for at least 24–48 hours. Avoid using a hair dryer or applying high heat.
The repair-mode message may have been caused by the unexpected shutdown or could indicate damage to the storage drive or another component. It’s impossible to tell from the amount of water alone—one drop can cause a short if it reaches the wrong spot. Don’t assume it’s safe just because the case looks dry, and avoid repeated power-on attempts until the machine has been fully inspected.
I didn’t realize the bottom had gotten wet until after I powered it on. I’ve dried the visible moisture and will leave it disconnected for at least another day before checking it again.
