Accidentally Connected 12V to My Laptop’s USB Port—Now It’s Dead!

I accidentally connected a 12V power source to my laptop's USB port, and now the laptop is completely unresponsive—no lights or sounds at all. I've already taken out the battery, but that didn't help. What can I do? Is there any chance of fixing this?

Honestly, it’s probably dead. But I'm curious, how did you even manage to connect something that gives 12V to a USB port? That sounds tricky!

Right? I can't even imagine how that would happen!

I have to agree with others; it's likely toast. Normally, USB devices handle voltage negotiation, so I’m curious about what you were using that would send 12V into your laptop. Did you modify any cables?

Oh man, it sounds like you might have fried some internal components. USB ports are only meant for 5V, so pumping 12V into one can mess things up pretty bad. You should try these steps: unplug everything, hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds to discharge the system, and then see if it works with just the AC power using a known-good charger. If there are no lights at all after that, it might be time for a motherboard repair or replacement. If you care about your data, don't worry too much; you can usually take out the SSD and retrieve your files externally. Hang in there!

But wait, isn’t USB meant to negotiate voltage? What did you actually plug into it to cause that issue?

Err, how did it even come to this? If you plugged something with a USB A connection, that wouldn’t help. USB A ports are usually hosts and may not have the same negotiation capabilities as USB C, which could lead to this kind of problem.

Exactly! If it was a USB A connection, then it might bypass the usual safety features. What were you trying to power?
