If you can go to Micro Center, I’d suggest picking up the PowerSpec G729 prebuilt. It will outperform any custom build you're trying to piece together right now, especially with the current market conditions.
Your friend missed the mark. Using an HDD and single-channel RAM in 2026? That really limits your performance potential. I’d go with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D bundle, swap the HDD for at least a 2TB NVMe SSD, and grab a 32GB DDR5 RAM kit. This setup offers much better upgrade paths in the future!
Check out Micro Center's bundles; they often have deals like this one: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X bundle that includes the CPU, motherboard, and 32GB of RAM for a great price. Going with an AMD AM5 CPU might give you better upgradability in the long run. Seriously, invest in an SSD for the fastest boot times and game loads!
Your build has a solid foundation, but you really should swap the HDD for an SSD. Load times for modern games can be drastically improved with an SSD, and they're relatively affordable these days. Also, consider using 2x8GB RAM instead of one 16GB stick for better performance in dual-channel mode!
Avoid Intel CPUs if you're thinking about future upgrades. They change their socket designs frequently, making it tough to upgrade later. Two sticks of RAM is the way to go for performance, so keep that in mind!
