Am I on the Right Track After Six Months of Learning Programming?

I've been learning programming for about five or six months. I've completed C and C++, and I'm nearly finished with data structures, but I still feel like I'm missing something. I sometimes struggle with problems that seem simple, and I'm not sure whether I'm learning correctly or whether I should start another course. I'm considering applying for the Digital Egypt Pioneers scholarship to specialize in backend development. Is that a reasonable direction, or should I change my approach? I'd really appreciate advice from experienced developers who have been through this stage.

Five or six months is still very early in programming, even if it feels like a long time while you’re experiencing it. Forgetting simple things usually means you need more practice applying concepts, not necessarily another course. Try building small projects, such as a to-do list API with user accounts or a book tracker with CRUD operations and a database. That will help connect your current knowledge to backend development.

Try working on small projects without following a tutorial step by step. A terminal to-do list, a program that reads a file and counts words, or a basic command-line tool can teach you a lot because you have to make the decisions yourself. Data structures also become much clearer when you implement them from scratch, such as your own linked list, stack, or binary tree. The difficult part is often where the real learning happens.
