I'm putting together a new system before handing my current PC down to my nephew. The planned build includes a Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, RTX 5090, 64GB of DDR5-6800 memory, a premium X870E motherboard, several NVMe and SATA SSDs, and a 1200W power supply. I'll use it for Minecraft and other games, multiple virtual machines, local AI experimentation, Windows gaming, photo editing, and Linux work. I also have 10Gb networking throughout the house. The parts total a little over $10,000, largely because of the 8TB PCIe 5.0 SSD and expensive motherboard. Are there any compatibility concerns, poor-value parts, or changes you would recommend?

The overall platform should be a monster for gaming, Linux, VMs, and creative work, assuming the parts are genuinely required and fit your budget. The case is expensive but appears suited to large components and airflow. I would verify the 5090 power-cable routing, radiator and GPU clearance, and PSU connector support. A 1200W unit is reasonable, though a 1500W model could provide more headroom if you expect future upgrades.
The biggest concern is value rather than compatibility. A $2,400 8TB PCIe 5.0 SSD is extremely expensive, and most games, photo-editing workloads, and even many AI projects won’t benefit much from PCIe 5.0 over a good PCIe 4.0 drive. You could use several cheaper drives or add storage later without noticeably slowing down the system.
That drive was already expensive when I first added it, but the current price is even more extreme. I’m definitely reconsidering it.
For gaming, this is more than you need, but your virtual machines and local AI work make the high-end CPU and 64GB of RAM easier to justify. Still, consider whether 96GB or 128GB would be more useful than unusually fast 64GB DDR5. AM5 systems can be picky at very high memory speeds, so DDR5-6000 with good timings is often a safer balance of stability and performance.
I’d take a close look at the motherboard. The premium board may be worthwhile if you need its exact connectivity and features, but otherwise a board costing a third as much should handle the CPU just as well. Since your main reason is built-in 10Gb networking, compare the cost of a less expensive X870E board plus a 10Gb adapter.
The integrated 10Gb networking is the main reason I chose it, but adding an adapter to a cheaper board may make much more sense. I’m not committed to the Dark Hero.

The system is definitely overkill for ordinary gaming, but running VMs and experimenting with AI are the reasons I’m considering it. I’m mainly trying to avoid paying a premium for parts that won’t help those workloads.
