APC Smart-UPS SRT 10000 Reported Inverter Fault—Repair It or Replace It?

Our 2018 APC Smart-UPS SRT 10000 (firmware 04.7, NMC2 6.5.6) reported an inverter fault today. It switched to bypass for roughly 50 minutes and then dropped the output entirely. The display only showed "Power Sys Error-02000," without a more specific sub-code, while the network management log recorded the generic inverter fault event 0x0165.

After clearing the error, I restored the output. The UPS currently appears normal and passes its self-test, but I'm concerned this could return. Our incoming power has also been unreliable lately, with low voltage or distorted input causing two to four transfers to battery each day. Although the unit is about seven years old, it spent most of its life in storage and has been operating for less than a year; the only service so far was replacing the battery cartridges.

Has anyone experienced this error on an SRT10KXLI? Did it remain a one-time event, or was it an early sign of inverter failure? Since the unit is out of warranty, I'm weighing professional repair against replacing it. I'd also appreciate advice on whether changing sensitivity or addressing the incoming power would help.

At this age, many organizations would replace the unit rather than gamble on an expensive inverter repair, especially if the load is important. A successful self-test only shows that it is functioning now; it doesn’t guarantee the fault won’t recur. Check the repair estimate, parts availability, and the cost of an outage before deciding. The fact that it spent much of its life in storage helps, but it doesn’t eliminate age-related issues in power electronics, capacitors, fans, or relays.

Updating the firmware is worth checking, but it probably won’t repair a genuine inverter hardware fault. Confirm the installed versions against the latest release and preserve the logs before clearing anything. Also verify that the replacement battery cartridges are genuine and properly recognized, since a battery problem can complicate diagnosis even though it usually wouldn’t directly explain an inverter error.

I was wondering whether newer firmware would actually make a difference here, since the UPS is currently passing its tests.

For a replacement, Eaton’s 9PX line is commonly considered a strong alternative in this capacity range. The important part is to compare service coverage, bypass arrangements, battery availability, monitoring features, and local support—not just the purchase price. I’d be cautious about choosing a cheaper unit for a critical load solely because it has similar headline specifications.

Start by contacting the manufacturer with the serial number and event logs. They may be able to identify the fault more precisely than the generic 02000 message. Also involve facilities or the building owner, because repeated transfers caused by low or distorted input are a serious power-quality problem. You can try lowering the input sensitivity if the equipment allows it, but that should not be used to hide genuinely bad utility power. If this is the normal environment, investigate the source of the disturbance rather than continuing to stress the UPS.

It is already an online double-conversion model—the SRT10KXLI—so I’m mainly trying to determine whether the inverter itself is deteriorating or reacting to the incoming power.

Some teams use CyberPower for less demanding or budget-sensitive installations, but for a 10 kVA system supporting critical equipment, I’d prioritize proven service support and a clear repair path. Regardless of brand, recurring utility disturbances should be investigated; replacing the UPS without fixing the input problem may simply shorten the life of the next one.
