Are 2TB NVMe SSD prices likely to drop soon?

My 2TB game drive died about four months ago, and my system no longer recognizes it. Replacing it currently seems to cost around $350–$400, so I've been keeping games on my operating-system drive instead. Has anyone seen credible signs that NVMe prices will come down soon? I'm also interested in reliable alternative brands or models that offer around 2TB without costing a fortune.

If the drive is only for a game library, a lower-cost SATA SSD or a smaller temporary drive could bridge the gap, though it will be slower than NVMe. Used storage can also be cheaper, but the lack of warranty and unknown wear make it a riskier choice for anything important.

There isn’t much concrete evidence that prices will drop soon. Demand from data centers and AI infrastructure is putting pressure on consumer memory and storage supply, so prices could stay high—or even get worse—before they improve. If you need the space now, I wouldn’t wait indefinitely.

Be careful with older recommendations for budget drives. Some models have changed from TLC NAND to QLC or received other component revisions, which can reduce sustained write performance and endurance. Check a current review of the exact model before buying rather than relying only on the brand name.

Industry forecasts suggest storage pricing may remain under pressure through at least 2027, with supply and demand potentially becoming more balanced sometime after that. Those predictions are especially uncertain because data-center demand can change quickly, so buying a reasonably priced drive now is probably safer than waiting for a specific price drop.

For gaming, you generally don’t need a premium NVMe drive. Most reputable models will perform similarly in actual game loading, and there are 2TB options closer to the $200–$225 range. The Crucial P310 is one example worth comparing, and occasional sales from brands like PNY or Silicon Power can be worthwhile.
