Are 51–54°C temperatures normal for a Ryzen 9 9900X at light desktop use?

I recently built a system with a Ryzen 9 9900X, an Inno3D iChill X3 OC RTX 5070 Ti 16GB, 32GB of 6000MHz RAM, and a Thermalright 360mm V4 AIO. With Chrome and Photoshop open but no active rendering or other heavy workload, HWiNFO reports the CPU at roughly 51–54°C. The room is around 26–27°C, and the CPU package is using about 54W. Individual core temperatures are lower, while CCD2 is around 51°C and the CPU Tctl/Tdie reading is about 52.5°C. Are these temperatures normal for light desktop use, or should I investigate the pump, fan curve, thermal paste, or BIOS settings?

Those temperatures are completely safe. “Idle” is not really a fixed state, especially with Chrome and Photoshop running, and short background tasks can keep one or two cores active. The important readings are the temperatures during your normal heavy workloads, not the idle minimum. Your After Effects rendering results—around 75°C peak in the detailed readings—are very good for this processor.

A true idle reading might be lower after closing background applications, but that is not a useful target. With light applications open, 50–55°C is expected. If the CPU were reaching the thermal limit during ordinary rendering or games, or if temperatures suddenly changed, then checking mounting pressure, pump speed, airflow, and BIOS settings would make sense.

There is no need to redo the thermal paste or change the pump settings based on these numbers. Ryzen 9000 chips are designed to operate safely up to roughly 95°C, and your reported rendering and gaming temperatures are well below that. Just verify that the pump is detected, the radiator fans are spinning, and sustained workloads remain comfortably under the thermal limit.

The Tctl/Tdie value is essentially a control or hotspot reading, so it can be noticeably higher than the average core temperature. Your actual core readings in the low-to-mid 30s show that most of the chip is cool. CCD2 being warmer does not indicate a cooler problem by itself.

Exactly. Modern Ryzen processors can briefly boost a core and report a higher hotspot even when overall utilization is low. The 51–54°C range is normal with a 26–27°C room.
