I'm wondering if I can use any 3.5mm boom microphone with my headset, since they both have 3.5mm jacks. For instance, if I buy a replacement mic for my HyperX headset, will it work with my Steelseries headset? Are there compatibility issues I should be aware of?

It's a bit tricky. Just because the connectors are the same size doesn't mean they'll work together flawlessly. You might want to stick with a Steelseries mic that’s designed for your headset. But if you’re looking for something different, check the specs to make sure it matches up before you buy!
I get that! I like my Steelseries headset too, but I think the mic needs an upgrade. I'm considering getting a longer boom mic for better placement.
