Are High CPU Temperatures Normal When Compiling Shaders or Gaming?

I've noticed that my CPU temperature spikes to 80-100°C when loading games and compiling shaders. I usually see these temperatures with titles like Battlefield 1, Space Marine 2, Cyberpunk, and Ready or Not, but Counter-Strike 2 doesn't seem to spike like that. During actual gameplay, my CPU temp stays between 50-65°C even on max settings. I have a Ryzen 7 9800x3D with a Noctua NH-U12S air cooler, and while some say this is normal for 100% CPU usage, I'm still a bit concerned about long-term effects. Should I be worried?

I'm having the same problem, but my computer shuts down when the temp spikes unexpectedly. It could be a PSU issue. Compiling shaders and heavy loads like entering games can cause those spikes, but as long as your temps are stable during gameplay, it's usually fine.

Honestly, it sounds normal for those high loads. If you notice really annoying noise from your fans going up and down, you might want to adjust the fan curve, but overall it seems manageable.

You might want to consider undervolting your CPU and setting a thermal limit to around 85°C. This could help keep your temperatures in check without compromising performance too much. Just make sure to monitor your system after adjustments!
GamerNerd456: That sounds like a plan! Just to clarify, setting a limit means it won’t hit 100% in the task manager, right?

It might not be relevant, but I had a cooling issue where my cooler just stopped performing well. Replacing the thermal paste helped, and that's something to consider if your temps are erratic.

TechSavvyGuy42: Oof, that doesn't sound good! Maybe your PSU isn't providing enough power? I'm relieved to hear that I'm under 65°C gaming, though!
