I have a Dell Alienware Aurora R11 with an RTX 3090. I bought it during the COVID-era hardware shortage, and it has performed well, but it has always been noticeably loud. The case is compact, and the warm air coming from the top vent is very obvious. I have never opened it up to clean or dust it.
I recently switched to open-back headphones so I can still hear my baby, and now the constant fan noise is difficult to ignore. I have even limited my games to 60 FPS to keep the system quieter. My gaming laptop also gets loud, while my PS5 is barely noticeable.
Are powerful gaming PCs generally this loud, or is the noise mainly due to the Alienware's compact case and cooling design? I am considering upgrading to a PC with an RTX 5080, but I would rather not do that if it will be just as noisy.

Start with maintenance before replacing anything. After several years, there is very likely dust in the heatsinks, filters, and fans even if the system still appears to work normally. Clean it carefully, then check CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming. If the temperatures are reasonable, you may also be able to create less aggressive fan curves or undervolt and power-limit the CPU and GPU with only a small performance loss.
High-end computers do not have to be loud. A roomy case with proper intake and exhaust, a capable CPU cooler, quiet case fans, and a non-OEM graphics card can stay fairly quiet during gaming. Alienware systems often use proprietary parts and cramped layouts, so moving the existing components to another case may be difficult or impossible. For a future build, prioritize airflow and cooler design instead of choosing only by GPU model.
Replacing the fans or adjusting the GPU can help, but the main issue is likely the overall thermal design rather than weak fans. You could investigate an undervolt or a modest power limit first. Newer graphics cards can also be more efficient than the 3090, but a 5080 system will still need to dissipate substantial heat. The warm air itself is normal; efficient cooling means removing that heat with less fan noise, not eliminating it.
That makes sense. I had assumed strong airflow meant the fans were working well, but the compact case may simply be forcing them to run at high speed all the time.
The noise is probably a combination of the RTX 3090’s high power draw and the Alienware case. A 3090 can use roughly 350 watts by itself, and that energy eventually becomes heat. The compact OEM layout does not provide much airflow, so the fans have to spin harder. A well-designed 5080 system with a spacious case, good fans, and a better GPU cooler should be significantly quieter, although it will still produce noticeable heat under load.
Mine does have one of the Dell dual-fan OEM 3090s, so that probably explains a lot of the constant fan speed.

I would definitely clean it first. A system that has never been opened over several years is unlikely to be dust-free, and restricted heatsinks can make the fans run constantly.
