I'm looking for a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that I can buy outright and turn on only when needed. I'd use it as backup internet during power outages and for connecting one or two iPads during long car trips. Ideally, I want no recurring subscription—just a device with mobile data that I pay for as I use it. It also needs to be separate from my phone because my phone is on an employer-provided plan that doesn't allow hotspot use. Are there any services or devices that work this way?

If you want this completely separate from your employer’s phone plan, buying an unlocked hotspot and keeping a prepaid SIM ready is likely the simplest setup. There probably isn’t a widely available option that charges only for the exact days or megabytes used with no expiration at all. A separate personal phone can also work as a hotspot, but a dedicated router is more convenient for the kids in the car and avoids relying on your work phone.
Another option is an eSIM data service, assuming the hotspot or an old unlocked phone supports eSIM. Services such as Ubigi and similar providers let you purchase a temporary data package when you need it, which can be useful for travel or emergencies. Check coverage, device compatibility, and how long the package remains active before buying.
I hadn’t considered using an eSIM in an older phone. I’ll look into which devices and networks are supported.
A portable hotspot or unlocked phone with a separate SIM is probably the closest option. The catch is that most carriers sell prepaid data in packages with an expiration period, such as a certain amount of data valid for 30 or 90 days, rather than letting you keep it indefinitely until you need it. A low-cost prepaid provider may be worth comparing, but unused data could expire.
That expiration period is my main concern. I may go months without needing backup internet, so I’d hate to pay for data that expires unused.
