ASUS ROG Strix G16 Suddenly Running Extremely Slowly and Overheating

I've been using my ASUS ROG Strix laptop for about two years for schoolwork, mainly Revit and AutoCAD. Recently it has become extremely slow all the time, almost like an old computer, and the display sometimes appears to shake or flicker. I haven't found any malware, and Windows and the hardware drivers are up to date. It's a notebook rather than a desktop, and the model is a ROG Strix G16. The CPU sometimes shows only around 4% usage while reaching 90ยฐC, which doesn't seem normal. What should I check to find the cause?

This sounds like possible thermal throttling. Dust buildup in the vents, blocked airflow, or a failing/dirty fan can make the laptop slow down dramatically even when the CPU isnโ€™t heavily loaded. Check that all vents are clear, clean the fans carefully, and monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while Revit is running. If temperatures remain very high, the thermal paste or cooling system may need servicing.

MellowPine42: If cleaning the vents and fans doesnโ€™t solve it, what else should I check?

Since itโ€™s a notebook, make sure itโ€™s plugged into its charger and set to an appropriate performance mode in the ASUS control software and Windows power settings. Also check whether the dedicated graphics processor is being used for Revit and AutoCAD. The exact model and hardware specifications would help determine whether this is a cooling, graphics, or power-setting issue.

A CPU temperature around 90ยฐC at only 4% usage is concerning, especially if that reading is accurate. Check temperatures with a reliable monitoring tool and compare CPU, GPU, and fan speeds at idle and under load. If the temperature is high at idle, inspect the cooling system first; persistent overheating can also explain the sluggish performance and display problems.
