I'm looking for advice on upgrading my CPU. I built my desktop back in 2020 primarily for photo editing with Lightroom, but since mid-2024, I've been using it for my freelance work, which involves extensive PCB design with Altium Designer among other software. I often have multiple applications open like CAD viewers, firmware development IDEs, messaging apps, and MS Office, and I've started to notice my system struggling with larger PCB designs. Here are my current specs:

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
- Motherboard: B450M BAZOOKA MAX WIFI
- RAM: 64GB DDR4 3000
- GPU: Radeon RX 570
- Storage: 1TB NVMe.

What would you recommend for an AM4 CPU upgrade that could enhance my performance before the end of the year?

As someone who's worked in PCB design, I'd suggest that upgrading your CPU might not resolve all your performance issues since it often depends on how the software uses the hardware. You should check Altium forums to see what specs others are using for similar workloads. I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but didn't find it made much difference for Kicad, which could be similar in your case.

Go for the Ryzen 7 5700X or 5900X if your budget allows. The price-to-cores ratio is fantastic and should significantly help with your workload. Just a reminder, the RX 570 might become the next bottleneck after the CPU upgrade, especially for 3D tasks.

If you're set on upgrading, consider the Ryzen 9 5900X. It fits your AM4 socket, so you won’t need a new motherboard or RAM. Just make sure your cooler is suited for it since the stock cooler with your 2600X might not cut it. Also, update your BIOS before you swap in the new CPU!

Definitely ensure to get a new cooler if you're upgrading to the Ryzen 9. Your B450M motherboard may need a BIOS update before you can use Ryzen 5000 series chips. After the CPU upgrade, remember to install the latest drivers to maximize performance.
