I built my current system in 2018 and would like to upgrade the processor and motherboard without replacing my 64GB of DDR4, since DDR5 would add too much cost. The current system has an Intel Core i5-9600K, MSI Z390 Gaming Edge AC motherboard, 64GB DDR4, an MSI RTX 3060 12GB, and an 850W MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 power supply.
The PC is mainly used for video editing, 3D modeling and design, scientific programming, compiling, AI workloads, virtual machines, and Docker containers rather than gaming. I am considering an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X with an MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk, or a 14th-generation Intel processor with a suitable DDR4 motherboard. I initially looked at Z790 boards, but I am unsure whether B760 or H-series boards can reliably handle sustained heavy workloads or provide the full capabilities of a 14th-generation CPU.
Which upgrade path makes the most sense while reusing my existing memory? I am located in Germany and would appreciate specific CPU and motherboard suggestions.

For your workload, Intel is probably the stronger choice if you can find a good price on a Core i7-14700K or possibly an i5-14600K. The 14700K's extra cores are useful for compiling, VMs, rendering, and other heavily threaded tasks. A quality B760 DDR4 board can run these CPUs; you do not need Z790 unless you specifically want CPU overclocking or additional connectivity. Choose a board with strong VRMs and good heatsinks, and make sure the BIOS has the newer Intel default power settings enabled. Also be aware that 14th-generation Intel chips can run hot and consume considerably more power under sustained workloads.
The Ryzen 9 5950X is still a capable 16-core processor, and moving to a B550 board would let you reuse your DDR4. It makes sense if the CPU and motherboard are substantially cheaper than a newer platform. However, AM4 is a dead-end upgrade path, so you would be buying into an older platform with no meaningful future CPU upgrade. A Ryzen 9 5900XT is another option if it is cheaper locally, although the real-world difference from a 5950X is small. For productivity, either AMD option will be a major improvement over the 9600K, but compare current German pricing before deciding.
Gaming is not the priority here. My main uses are video editing, 3D work, scientific programming, compiling, AI tools, VMs, and Docker, so I am mostly looking at sustained multicore performance and enough memory capacity.
The 64GB is mainly needed for running several VMs and Docker containers at the same time. I was considering Z790 because I had read that B- and H-series boards might not be as stable for long, heavy workloads, but I will look more closely at strong B760 DDR4 models available in Germany.
