I'm building a gaming PC for my son and haven't kept up with hardware for around five years. The budget is roughly £850–£1,000, and I'm happy to buy some components second-hand. I was initially considering an RTX 3080, but I'm open to better-value alternatives. He'll mainly play Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, and Rocket League, with the possibility of doing more demanding gaming later. Ideally, the system should handle 1440p gaming well. Would an AM4 or AM5 build make more sense, especially with current DDR5 prices, and which parts would you recommend?

A used Ryzen 3000 or 5000 system could be a good starting point, particularly if it already includes 16GB of RAM and at least a 500GB SSD. You may only need to replace the graphics card and power supply. Be patient and prioritize systems that can be collected locally, since delivery costs can make used deals less attractive. Check the exact motherboard and PSU models before buying.
For Fortnite, Minecraft, Rocket League, and Roblox, you don’t need an extreme build right away. A balanced 1440p system with a capable six- or eight-core CPU and a mid-to-high-range GPU would be plenty. AMD cards have become much more competitive, so compare current performance, power use, ray tracing, and upscaling support instead of assuming Nvidia is automatically the better option.
For this budget, hunting through local listings for a complete used system or individual parts is probably the best value. An AM4 build with a Ryzen 5 5600 or 5700X3D, 16–32GB of DDR4, and a good B550 motherboard can still be excellent for 1440p. Put the savings toward the graphics card, a quality power supply, and a decent SSD. Leave some budget for the case and peripherals too.
If you can find one at a sensible price, an X3D processor is a strong choice for gaming and should give the machine a longer useful life. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D on AM4 is often easier to fit into this budget than a new AM5 platform because DDR4 and compatible motherboards are cheaper. Pair it with 32GB of RAM and the best modern GPU you can afford rather than locking yourself specifically to an RTX 3080.
That makes sense. I’ve always gone with Nvidia for graphics cards, but I’ll compare AMD options properly rather than choosing an RTX 3080 automatically.
