I'm currently running an i5-12400F, DDR5-6000 memory, and an RX 6700 XT. I mainly play competitive games such as Counter-Strike and Valorant at 1080p, and I'm trying to maximize FPS for a 240 Hz monitor that I may upgrade to 360–400 Hz.
I'm considering upgrading to an i5-14600K and possibly an RX 6800 XT, since I can get one at a good price. Would the 14600K be enough to avoid limiting the GPU in these games? Is the 6800 XT a worthwhile upgrade, or should I consider a newer 7000- or 9000-series card instead? I'd prefer to get the most performance possible from my current LGA1700 motherboard rather than switching to AM5, and I'm also using an ASUS PRIME Z790-P with a 700W be quiet! Pure Power 11 Gold power supply.

AM5 would give you a longer upgrade path, but it also means replacing the motherboard. Since you already own a Z790 board and want maximum LGA1700 performance, the 14600K is a reasonable endpoint. A platform change makes more sense later when you’re ready for a major rebuild.
I’d prioritize the CPU upgrade if you can get the 14600K at a particularly good price. The jump from an RX 6700 XT to a 6800 XT is useful, but at 1080p in competitive games you may be CPU-limited more often than GPU-limited. A newer graphics card is only worth it if the price and performance difference are clearly better.
