I'm thinking about getting an older ThinkPad laptop primarily for exploring Linux and doing some coding. I've been using Cachyos on my desktop and really enjoy it, but I'm not sure if it's lightweight enough for an older, less powerful laptop. Any good distro recommendations for this setup? I'm also considering Arch, but I could use some advice on which desktop environment or window manager would suit me best.
Just to give you some context, I'm looking at a ThinkPad T480 or T480s with 16GB of RAM and either an i5 or i7 processor.

You might want to check out a distro selection page to help narrow it down! Honestly, with your specs, you should be able to run most distros pretty smoothly. If you're eager to experiment, consider something like Void Linux or even FreeBSD for a challenge. It's great to play around with something outside your comfort zone!
LOL, I get it! But seriously, a bit more info on your ThinkPad would help! Which model exactly and how old are we talking about? That could make a difference in your options.

I added some more details on the model! Thanks for the prompt.
