I just bought a brand-new iPhone 17, but it won't charge when connected through USB-C. MagSafe charging works normally. Has anyone run into this, and are there any troubleshooting steps I should try before returning it?

Install the latest iOS update if one is available, then try powering the phone off and back on. A forced restart is also worth trying, but a brand-new phone that still refuses wired charging should be taken back to the store.
There have been reports of charging problems on some early iPhone 17 models, particularly when the battery was completely drained. Updating iOS may resolve it, but if the issue continues after testing another cable and restarting, replacement is the sensible option.
Try a different USB-C cable and power adapter first, and check whether the port has any debris in it. If another known-working setup still doesn’t charge the phone, it’s probably best to exchange or return it while it’s still new.
I had remembered the issue slightly wrong—it mainly affected phones that had fully run out of battery, but checking for an update is still worthwhile.
