Building a PC in 2026: What’s Changed With Drivers, BIOS, and Fan Control?

I'm planning to build a new PC soon, but my last build was an i5-3570K system from around 2012. I remember having to manually install motherboard and graphics drivers, configure memory and FSB settings, and deal with outdated motherboard utilities.

On my current system, the manufacturer's fan-control software stopped working properly after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The CPU fan ran at full speed until SpeedFan launched with administrator permission, so I had to rely on that workaround.

For a modern build, do I still need to download every driver separately from the motherboard and graphics-card manufacturers? How are CPU and case fans normally controlled now? Is fan control handled through the BIOS, Windows software, or a separate hub?

Do I still need to configure FSB or manually calibrate RAM, or is that handled automatically? I'd also appreciate a rundown of anything else that has changed in the installation process since 2012.

Windows usually installs working drivers for USB, networking, audio, and other basic hardware automatically. After installation, it’s still a good idea to download the motherboard chipset and networking drivers from the board manufacturer, plus the latest graphics driver from NVIDIA or AMD. You generally don’t need a collection of random utilities from the motherboard vendor.

You won’t be dealing with FSB tuning like on older systems. Memory training happens automatically during startup, though you should enable XMP or EXPO in the BIOS so your RAM runs at its advertised speed. The process is basically: assemble the hardware, update the BIOS if needed, install Windows from a USB drive, install chipset and GPU drivers, then enable XMP/EXPO and configure fan curves.

M.2 SSDs also make storage installation simpler because they usually connect directly to the motherboard without separate power or data cables. If possible, choose a board with BIOS Flashback, since it lets you update the firmware from a USB drive even if the installed CPU isn’t supported by the current BIOS.

Fan control is much less dependent on old manufacturer utilities now. Modern motherboards let you set CPU and case-fan curves directly in the UEFI/BIOS using temperature sensors. That configuration works before Windows even starts. You can also use a reputable third-party tool in Windows if you want more control, but the BIOS settings are usually enough. RGB control is separate and often still requires vendor software or an open-source alternative.
