My case is fairly small, so I installed a fan on the bottom to improve airflow. The GPU actually became noticeably quieter afterward. My brother says that blowing air directly into the GPU from below could damage it or reduce its lifespan. Is there any truth to that? The system has been running this way for almost three years without obvious hardware problems. I have experienced occasional crashes, black screens, and sudden restarts, but those seemed more likely to be related to outdated drivers or loose cables.

The clearance in your setup sounds healthy. Bottom fans are commonly used to feed fresh air directly into a graphics card, and airflow from that direction does not shorten the card’s life. Just keep the dust filters and fan blades clean, and make sure the fan is mounted securely.
The fan itself is not a likely cause of sudden restarts. A black screen without a reboot can be driver-related, but a full restart under GPU load can point to power delivery, unstable overclocks, overheating, loose connections, or a failing power supply. Check temperatures, update drivers, reseat the power cables, and test the system at stock settings before replacing the PSU. If the restarts continue during demanding workloads, testing with a known-good PSU would be more useful than immediately undervolting.
A bottom intake fan will not damage the GPU. It is simply supplying cooler air to the card, which can help it run quieter and at lower temperatures. As long as the fans are not physically touching the graphics card and there is reasonable clearance, this is a normal case layout.
What would count as unhealthy clearance? Is it mainly a problem if the fan is almost touching the GPU?
Using both bottom and side intake fans is a perfectly normal arrangement. The extra airflow can reduce the workload on the GPU cooler rather than harm the card. Case manufacturers use this kind of layout regularly, so there is no general rule that air coming from below is dangerous.
I do sometimes get a black screen without a restart, so updating the drivers is still on my list. I’ll also check the cables and temperatures before changing the power supply.
