Can a budget external USB sound card run my old analog 5.1 speaker system?

My motherboard's onboard audio ports have stopped working, and I need a replacement for an older Teufel Concept F speaker system that connects to the PC with three separate 3.5 mm analog plugs for 5.1 audio. I mainly use it for gaming and bass-heavy music, so I don't need anything high-end. A physical control or software option for turning down the bass would be useful for keeping the neighbors happy, but it isn't essential. Would an external USB 5.1 sound card costing less than โฌ50 be sufficient, and are there any models worth considering?

A basic external USB surround adapter such as the StarTech ICUSBAUDIO7D should be suitable. When shopping, make sure the device has three separate analog 3.5 mm outputs for front, rear, and center/sub channelsโmany inexpensive USB adapters only provide stereo output or virtual surround, so they wonโt connect directly to your speaker system. Search for external USB 5.1 or 7.1 sound cards and check the output layout carefully. Sub-โฌ50 models should be fine for gaming and music, though bass adjustment may need to be handled through Windows, the driver software, or the speaker system itself.
