Can a Faulty RAM Stick Damage My PC?

I'm new to building PCs and currently have a prebuilt system with only 8GB of DDR3 RAM. I'm planning to upgrade to 16GB by buying a used 8GB stick, but I'm worried that the RAM stick might be faulty. If that happens, could it potentially damage my hardware or software? Am I overthinking this? If the stick turns out to be faulty, I should just be able to remove it and everything will be fine, right? Also, what software do you recommend for testing RAM? Thanks!
