Can a KVM switch let me share three monitors, a keyboard, and a mouse between my work laptop and home PC?

I'm trying to simplify my office setup. I currently have a work laptop connected through a dock to two monitors, a keyboard, and a mouse, while my home PC uses three monitors and its own peripherals. With another computer in the room, the desk is getting crowded, so I'd like to keep only three monitors and share them, along with one keyboard and mouse, between the work laptop and home PC. Would a KVM switch handle this, or would a USB switch and manually changing monitor inputs be a better solution? The monitors use DisplayPort, and the laptop would likely connect through a dock or a USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter.

A simpler and usually cheaper option is a USB switch combined with the monitor inputs. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the USB switch, then connect its outputs to the laptop dock and home PC. Run the laptopโs video cables and the PCโs video cables to separate inputs on the monitors. When switching computers, press the USB switch button and change each monitor to the other input. It takes a few seconds, but avoids the cost and potential quirks of a triple-monitor KVM.

If you donโt need every monitor to switch together, a mixed setup can be convenient. Put two monitors on the KVM or USB-switch arrangement and leave the third connected directly to the home PC. That lets you keep an eye on the personal computer while using the laptop, and it avoids buying a more expensive three-monitor KVM.

Another possibility is using peripherals that support multiple devices. Some keyboards and mice can switch between computers with a button, while the monitors are changed using their built-in input controls. Software such as a network-based keyboard-and-mouse sharing tool can also work, but it may not be allowed on a managed work laptop and wonโt solve the monitor switching by itself.

Yes, a KVM is designed for exactly this: it switches the video signals and USB peripherals between computers with one button. For three monitors, youโll need a triple-monitor KVM with enough DisplayPort inputs and outputs. Check the supported resolution and refresh rate carefully, since some less expensive models may limit you to 60 Hz or have trouble with higher resolutions. The laptopโs dock should provide the three video connections, or youโll need suitable USB-C video adapters that support your monitorsโ resolution.
MellowCedar47: That makes sense. Iโll need to confirm whether the laptop dock can drive all three monitors and match the KVMโs DisplayPort requirements before buying anything.

CopperLime61: That approach works even when the same monitors are shared. The USB switch handles the keyboard and mouse; the monitor input changes are done separately.
