I have very little desk space and short cables, so I usually keep my external hard drives near the edge of the desk beside my computer. During an online college exam, I had to move my webcam, and its cable knocked over one of the drives while it was powered on. It didn't hit the floor—it tipped over and was partly held by the cable—but afterward it started beeping and no longer appeared on my computer. Are mechanical hard drives really that vulnerable to being moved while they're running?

The sound may not literally be a built-in beeper—hard drives usually don’t have speakers. Repeated clicking, buzzing, or beeping-like sounds can indicate that the drive is repeatedly trying and failing to initialize. Before assuming the disk itself is dead, try another USB cable, another port, and possibly another computer. Also check whether the drive appears in the operating system’s disk-management utility even if it doesn’t mount normally.
A drive sitting still on a desk can run for many years, but it should be placed somewhere stable rather than near the edge with a cable that can pull it over. Solid-state drives tolerate movement much better because they have no spinning platters or moving heads, though they still need backups and can fail for other reasons.
If the drive contains important files, stop repeatedly plugging it in and attempting to start it. Continued operation can make platter or head damage worse. A professional recovery service may be able to retrieve the data, but it can cost a lot, often hundreds or thousands of dollars. For the future, keep important files in multiple places—such as a local copy, a separate backup, and cloud storage—because every hard drive eventually fails.
Mechanical hard drives can be damaged by sudden movement or impacts while powered on. The read/write heads operate extremely close to the spinning platters, so a sharp bump can cause them to touch the platter surface. A gentle nudge won’t always destroy a drive, but tipping over with the cable pulling on it is definitely risky. External drives generally aren’t secured or protected as well as laptop drives, although some models do have sensors that park the heads during a fall.
I’ve carried external hard drives in a backpack for years without problems, so they aren’t made of glass. The important thing is to avoid drops, sudden cable tugs, and moving them while they’re actively reading or writing.
