I have very limited desk space and short cables, so I usually keep my external mechanical hard drives near the edge of my desk beside my computer. During an online college exam, I rearranged my webcam and accidentally knocked over one of the drives while it was powered on. It did not hit the floor, but it tipped over and the cable may have stopped it from falling completely. I heard beeping afterward, and now the drive is not detected, even after being unplugged for several hours. Are mechanical hard drives really that vulnerable to movement while operating, and is there anything I can safely try?

Mechanical drives can be damaged by a sudden bump or jolt while the platters are spinning, because the read/write heads are extremely close to the surface. A gentle nudge is not guaranteed to destroy one, but tipping over and having the cable catch it can create a sharp impact. Some drives have sensors that park the heads during a detected fall, but external models do not all have the same protection.

Before assuming the platters are destroyed, try basic hardware checks: a different USB cable, another USB port, and another computer. Also check whether the drive is visible in Disk Management or the equivalent storage utility. If it makes repeated clicking, beeping, or grinding noises, stop powering it on rather than repeatedly testing it.

If the files are important, disconnect the drive and contact a professional data-recovery service. Recovery can be expensive, especially if the heads or platter surface were damaged, and DIY repair attempts can make the situation worse. External hard drives are not made of glass—many survive years sitting on a desk or even careful transport in a padded bag. The real danger is a sudden drop, twist, or cable jerk while the drive is spinning. Solid-state drives tolerate movement much better, but they still need backups because they can fail without warning.
