Wix is popular because it gets a decent-looking website online quickly without requiring the owner to understand hosting, updates, coding, or deployments. That convenience is often cheaper in the short term than hiring a developer. The tradeoff is less control, ongoing platform costs, and difficulty moving the finished site elsewhere. A custom domain can still be connected to Wix, so the real distinction is usually Wix-managed hosting versus independently managed hosting, not the domain itself.

The practical alternative is to rebuild the site on hosting you control and point the customer’s domain to it. You might be able to copy text and download some images, but the layout, styling, forms, and Wix-specific functionality will usually need to be recreated manually. The amount to charge depends heavily on the number of pages and features, but migrations can become a headache if the client expects everything to work exactly as it did before.

Wix sites generally can’t be exported as a complete, working project and then freely edited elsewhere. The platform keeps much of the site tied to its own systems, especially things like forms, databases, apps, and dynamic features. You can manually recreate the design on another platform, but there isn’t a reliable one-click conversion back and forth. In many cases, starting a new site is less work than trying to untangle and migrate the old one.
