I've misplaced my USB-C Apple Pencil, and my iPad occasionally shows it as connected even though I can't find it anywhere. The status usually changes back to disconnected within about a minute. Could this be a temporary Bluetooth or software error, or does it reliably mean the Pencil is somewhere nearby? I've already checked the obvious places, including metal surfaces and areas around my desk, and I'm wondering whether a Bluetooth-scanning app could help locate it.

It may genuinely still be nearby. Even though this model doesn’t charge wirelessly, its magnets can make it stick to metal surfaces such as desk legs, table frames, shelves, or other furniture. It could also have come loose inside a bag and rolled somewhere without being obvious.
A brief connected status could be caused by the Pencil waking up and reconnecting, though it’s difficult to tell whether that’s a software glitch or a real connection. A Bluetooth signal-strength app can sometimes help you search by moving around and watching whether the signal gets stronger, but Apple Pencils may not appear with an obvious name and nearby devices can make the results confusing.
I tried a Bluetooth-finder app, but nothing in the list clearly looked like the Pencil. It did connect to the iPad while I was checking, then disconnected again, so I’m still unsure whether the status is reliable or just an error.
I checked the metal surfaces around my room but still couldn’t find it. It may have come loose from my iPad or bag while I was outside, which would explain why I can’t locate it now.
