I'm planning a compact gaming PC for my partner with a budget below $1,000. We already have a 1080p monitor, keyboard, and mouse, so the budget is for the computer itself. We'd like to make the build a fun challenge using an APU or integrated graphics instead of a separate CPU and graphics card, ideally in a small desktop case that stays quiet and cool.
The target is roughly the performance of an older system with an RTX 3080 12GB, although we would prefer something more efficient and quieter. What APU, motherboard, memory, and compact-case combination would be suitable for mid-range 1080p gaming? Is it practical to use laptop-style components in a small desktop build, or would another approach make more sense?

Laptop motherboards generally aren't modular desktop parts. The CPU and GPU are soldered to the board, and the cooling system is designed around the original laptop chassis and airflow path. Moving the board into an open desktop case may create cooling, power, mounting, and firmware problems. If you want laptop hardware, keeping it in the laptop or buying a purpose-built mini PC is usually more practical.
An integrated GPU cannot currently match an RTX 3080 12GB, especially within a complete $1,000 build. The Ryzen 7 8700G is one of the strongest conventional desktop APUs, but its graphics performance is closer to an entry-level RTX 3050 laptop GPU. It can handle 1080p gaming with appropriate settings, but it is nowhere near 3080 performance. APUs also provide fewer PCIe lanes, which can limit future upgrades involving a discrete GPU and NVMe storage.
Newer high-end mobile APUs, such as the Ryzen AI 395-class chips, offer better integrated graphics, and some manufacturers sell them in small desktop systems. However, complete systems generally cost more than the stated budget, still fall well short of an RTX 3080, and tend to have very limited upgrade options.
The idea was to find out whether an APU could be combined with normal desktop components in a compact gaming system. We were hoping that removing the separate graphics card would save space, simplify cooling, and still provide decent 1080p performance.
