Can an iPhone 3G or 3GS Be Upgraded to Use 5G?

I found an old iPhone 3G or possibly an iPhone 3GS and would like to use it again. Since it only supports 3G, which is no longer available in many places, is there any practical way to upgrade the phone so it can connect directly to modern 4G or 5G cellular networks?

A workaround is possible, but it would not turn the phone into a 5G device. You could use a separate 4G or 5G hotspot and connect the old phone to it over Wi-Fi. That may allow basic web access or other simple Wi-Fi functions, though many services may still no longer work.

No. The phone lacks the required cellular modem, radio chips, and antennas for 4G or 5G. Those components cannot realistically be upgraded, so replacing them would cost far more than the phone is worth.

It is not just a software limitation—the hardware was never designed to communicate with modern cellular networks.

There was no model officially called the iPhone 3; it was probably an iPhone 3G or 3GS. Either way, a direct 5G upgrade is not practical, and modern apps would also be incompatible with its old operating system.
