Can Batocera Run Python Games, and Are There Python-Based Fantasy Consoles?

I'm curious how well Batocera-style gaming machines can run Python. Since Batocera is used on small handhelds and other compact systems, can Python games or programs run on it normally? I'm also looking for something like a fantasy console: a small handheld or restricted development environment designed specifically for Python, with limits that make games feel like they're running on a tiny system, similar to the Pico-8.

Batocera is essentially a Linux distribution, commonly running on x86 hardware, so regular Python programs should work as long as you can install or access a suitable Python runtime. The main limitations would come from the hardware and Batoceraโs system configuration rather than Python itself. A fantasy console is a separate concept: it intentionally provides a fixed, simplified environment and restrictions for making games.

There are small devices that use MicroPython rather than full desktop Python. The PicoSystem is one example of a compact handheld designed around simple games and MicroPython, although availability can vary. Similar microcontroller-based projects may also provide the kind of hardware limits youโre looking for.

TIC-80 is probably the closest match among fantasy consoles, and it has support for creating games with Python through its bindings. Godot also has Python integrations, but itโs a full game engine rather than a fantasy console. If you use Godot, its built-in GDScript is usually the smoother choice because its syntax is very Python-like.
