Can data be recovered from an iPhone 11 Pro Max after a full factory reset?

I had an iPhone 11 Pro Max containing personal photos, messages, contacts, saved passwords, and payment-related information. Before the phone left my possession, I used Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings and waited for the process to finish. It then displayed the normal "Hello" setup screen. I also removed the device from my Apple Account afterward. I'm worried that the new owner may be technically skilled and might try to recover data directly from the phone. Could advanced forensic tools recover anything from the device itself—such as photos, messages, passwords, PayPal details, payment information, Find My data, or Bluetooth history—or does the full erase make that realistically impossible? I'm asking specifically about recovery from the erased physical phone, not someone separately breaking into my online accounts.

In theory, highly specialized forensic organizations or government-level attackers might have capabilities unavailable to the public, but that would involve extraordinary resources and expense. For a normal person claiming to be a hacker, recovering your old data from this erased iPhone is not a realistic concern.

You should be fine. Modern iPhones encrypt their storage, and a full Erase All Content and Settings removes the information needed to decrypt the old data. Recovering anything would generally require both the old encryption keys protected by the Secure Enclave and the device passcode. That is far beyond what an ordinary technically skilled person with a computer can do.

The bigger practical concern would be access to your accounts rather than recovering the old storage. Make sure your Apple Account, email, PayPal, and financial accounts have strong unique passwords and two-factor authentication, and review active sessions or trusted devices. Those steps are separate from what can be recovered from the erased phone itself.

Since the erase completed and the phone reached the “Hello” setup screen, the previous user data should not be recoverable through normal tools. Manually deleting individual files would be a different situation, but you used the proper full-device erase process.
