Can I Add or Upgrade the Firewall on My Home Router?

A firewall is useful for controlling traffic, but it won’t automatically make public Wi-Fi safe or solve every wireless security issue. On your own network, use current WPA2 or WPA3 security, update your router and devices, and avoid exposing services to the internet unless you specifically need them. Extra firewall software is possible in some setups, but it should address a clear need rather than being added just because more layers sound safer.

Most home routers already include a basic firewall, usually through NAT and built-in inbound traffic controls. For typical home use, that’s generally enough. Before adding more security layers, it helps to identify a specific problem you’re trying to solve, since unnecessary firewall rules can make the network harder to manage without providing much extra protection.

Another option is to place a dedicated firewall device between the modem and your existing router. This can provide more advanced rules and monitoring, but it adds cost, configuration work, and the possibility of double-NAT or incorrect rules. For most households, keeping the router’s firmware current, using strong Wi-Fi encryption and a unique password, disabling unnecessary remote administration, and replacing end-of-support equipment will make a bigger difference than adding another firewall.

If you want more control, you can use a router that supports alternative firmware such as OpenWrt or DD-WRT. Some compatible routers can also run additional firewall or IP-blocking tools. Check the exact model first, keep the firmware updated, and make sure you know how to recover the device if the installation goes wrong.

Many ISP-provided routers let you choose different firewall or security levels. Turning everything up to the maximum can cause problems, though: device-to-device features such as casting or network discovery may stop working, and you might have to create exceptions for services you trust.
