Can I clone my Windows 11 boot drive to a smaller SSD before installing Linux?

I have a new PC with Windows 11 installed on a 2 TB NVMe SSD, but I want to install Linux on that faster drive and keep Windows available as a backup for dual booting. I also have a slower 1 TB NVMe SSD from an older computer and would like to clone the entire Windows installation onto it before wiping the 2 TB drive. The system uses an ASUS B650 motherboard and a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Are there potential problems with cloning to a smaller drive, Secure Boot, or getting Windows to boot afterward? I plan to test the cloned drive before erasing the original.

The main complication is that youโre cloning from a larger drive to a smaller one. The used space on the Windows drive, including its EFI and recovery partitions, must fit within the 1 TB SSD. Shrink the Windows partition first if necessary, then use a cloning tool that supports resizing or cloning to a smaller target. Clone the entire disk rather than only the main Windows partition.

Clonezilla can handle this as long as the partitions are small enough to fit. Resize the partitions beforehand or use its option for adapting the layout to the target disk. After cloning, shut down and boot from the 1 TB SSD to verify that Windows, recovery, and the bootloader all work before touching the 2 TB drive.

Secure Boot usually isnโt the main issue here. A properly cloned UEFI/GPT Windows installation should continue to boot, but firmware boot order may need adjusting so the system selects the cloned drive. If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, make sure you have the recovery key and expect it may request recovery after the disk change. Keep a separate backup of important files as well.

MellowCedar42: There isnโt much data on the drive yet, so everything should fit. Iโll test the smaller SSD before wiping the original.
