Can I install Windows on my 2TB data drive without losing my files?

My current PC has two hard drives: a 500GB drive with Windows installed and a 2TB drive containing my games, photos, projects, and other important files. The 500GB drive is very old and appears to be failing, so I want to remove it and temporarily install a fresh copy of Windows on the 2TB drive until I can afford an SSD. Is there a safe way to do this without losing the data already on the 2TB drive? I have used MiniTool Partition Wizard before, but I'm not confident enough to risk my files. Windows also tries to repair the old system drive during boot.

Windows 10 and 11 will generally feel slow on a hard drive, especially when the same disk is also handling games and personal files. If possible, buy an SSD for Windows instead. Since the old drive is showing repair errors, replace it soon rather than relying on it. At minimum, copy your irreplaceable files to another physical drive before changing partitions. A good long-term backup plan is the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two different devices, with one stored elsewhere.

If the 2TB drive already contains another Windows installation, an in-place reinstall may offer options to keep personal files. That does not apply reliably to a drive that only contains data, though, and it is not a substitute for a backup. For a data-only drive, the safer process is to copy the files elsewhere, install Windows to a dedicated partition or replacement drive, and then restore or reconnect the data.
