I'm putting together my first gaming PC for my son and based the parts list on a recommended AMD gaming and streaming build guide. It will mainly be used for general gaming rather than any specific titles. Before buying everything, are there components that seem unnecessary or areas where I could save money without hurting performance? I haven't chosen a monitor yet, so advice on a suitable resolution would also help. There's a Micro Center nearby if bundle deals or in-store pricing might make a difference.

If the smaller micro-ATX size isn’t important, compare standard ATX boards and cases too. Also, check reviews for the specific motherboard model instead of choosing solely by brand, since some boards have had more reported issues this generation. Graphics-card and motherboard bundle discounts are worth checking because build-planning sites may not include them.
The graphics card looks like the biggest place to reconsider. Paying around $840 for an RTX 5070 seems high, so compare it with a Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB or a well-priced RX 9060 XT 16GB. The 9070 XT is generally the stronger value at that price point.
Check Micro Center before ordering. Their CPU, motherboard, and RAM bundles can sometimes save a substantial amount, and they may have better pricing on the graphics card as well. Bring the list along and ask them to verify compatibility, but compare the final bundle price against online retailers first.

The right monitor resolution depends on the games and budget. For this level of system, a 1440p high-refresh-rate monitor is probably the best balance of image quality and performance. A 1080p display would be cheaper, while 4K generally costs more and may require reducing settings in demanding games.
