Can I mix 16GB and 8GB RAM on an AM4 system?

I'm currently gaming with a Ryzen 5 5500X3D, an RX 6650 XT, and 16GB of 2666MHz RAM. I mainly play Overwatch, and memory usage goes above 95% when I'm playing while using Discord. I'm considering adding an 8GB stick, but I'm unsure how a 16GB + 8GB configuration would operate. Would it still use dual-channel memory, or would it switch to single-channel or Flex Mode? I've also seen claims that X3D processors handle single-channel memory particularly well, so I'd like to know what's actually correct.

A 16GB and 8GB combination can usually run in a hybrid or Flex Mode configuration. The first 8GB of each stick can operate in dual-channel mode, while the remaining 8GB on the larger stick runs in single-channel mode. It wonโt be as ideal as a matched kit, but it generally performs better than having only 8GB available, especially if your system is running out of memory.

Overwatch and Discord normally shouldnโt make a healthy 16GB system unusable, so itโs worth checking Task Manager for the applications consuming memory and closing anything unnecessary. That said, if the system is genuinely reaching its limit and using the page file, upgrading to 32GB will help more than worrying about whether usage rises after the upgrade. The operating system may simply use the extra RAM for caching.

Before upgrading, check whether the 16GB is one 16GB stick or two 8GB sticks. If you currently have 2x8GB, adding one 8GB stick may complicate the memory layout, and a matched kit would be preferable. Also, high memory usage alone doesnโt necessarily mean thereโs a problemโWindows uses available RAM for cachingโbut paging or noticeable stuttering indicates that more memory could help.

It should work, but mixing capacities and possibly different memory kits can make stability and memory speed less predictable. If you want the cleanest upgrade, replacing the current memory with a matched 2x16GB kit is the better choice. If budget is tight, adding 8GB is still a reasonable temporary upgrade, provided the system remains stable.

SilverKite24: The X3D label doesnโt make single-channel memory equivalent to dual-channel. These CPUs can still run games well, but balanced dual-channel memory is generally the better setup.
