I'm building a new PC with a different motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Can I move the M.2 drives and SSDs from my current computer into the new system and use them normally, including the drive with Windows installed, or will I need to reinstall everything?

You can try transferring the Windows drive first. Make sure you’re connected to the internet, run Windows Update, and install the new motherboard and chipset drivers. If everything works properly, you may not need to reinstall immediately. Keep in mind that Windows activation might need to be rechecked after replacing the motherboard.

For the least risk of driver conflicts, back up your files and perform a fresh Windows install on the new system. Beforehand, download the new motherboard drivers and graphics drivers. If you want to try keeping the existing installation, uninstall the old chipset and graphics drivers first, then use a clean graphics-driver removal tool and install the replacements after the upgrade.

A fresh install is definitely cleaner, but an existing installation can sometimes survive several platform changes. I moved one Windows installation across multiple processors and motherboards and only had to replace the outdated drivers afterward.

The drives containing games, files, or other data should generally work without much trouble. The Windows drive may also boot, but a major platform change can leave behind old chipset, storage, graphics, and motherboard drivers. A clean Windows installation is usually the most reliable option.

That makes sense. I was mainly worried about whether the data drives would still be usable, so it’s good to know those should be straightforward.
