My desktop PC currently runs Windows, while my laptop runs Fedora Cosmic Spin. The laptop's screen has failed, so I'm considering turning it into a home server and moving its Linux SSD into my desktop, along with another SSD and an external hard drive. I'd like to keep Windows for games and applications that don't work well on Linux, while using Fedora for college and everyday Linux tasks. Is it generally safe to move the installed Fedora drive into the desktop, and should I expect boot, driver, or hardware-compatibility problems?

The biggest annoyance is usually Windows updates changing the default boot entry or making the Linux option disappear temporarily. That normally doesn’t damage the Linux installation or erase data; you may just need to select the Fedora drive manually or repair the bootloader. It’s also a good idea to disable Windows Fast Startup, since it leaves Windows partially hibernated and can cause problems when accessing shared drives from Linux.
With Fedora and Windows on separate drives, the operating systems generally won’t interfere with each other beyond the boot process. Use the firmware boot menu to choose which drive to start, or set the preferred drive in the BIOS/UEFI boot order. Make sure both installations use the same boot mode, preferably UEFI, rather than mixing UEFI and legacy mode.
It will probably boot normally. Most official Linux kernels support a wide range of hardware, so Fedora should detect the desktop’s components during startup. The main exception is graphics hardware, especially an NVIDIA card that needs a proprietary driver. You may need to install or change the graphics driver after the move, and hardware such as Wi-Fi adapters may also require setup.
Linux is much more portable between computers than Windows, so there’s a good chance the existing Fedora installation will work without reinstalling. Still, back up anything important first. After moving the SSD, check the graphics, network, audio, and bootloader configuration, and be prepared to reinstall a driver or regenerate the boot entries if the desktop uses substantially different hardware.
