Can I move my old laptop’s drive into a replacement and keep my files?

My Acer laptop's screen is cracked internally and no longer displays anything. Repairs seem expensive, so I'm considering buying the same model—or possibly another compatible laptop—and moving the physical storage drive from the old machine into it. Would Windows, my installed programs, photos, and other files work normally on the replacement, or would I need to repair the old laptop first? I have an Acer Aspire 3, model A315-59-55KU, and I don't use OneDrive. I do have some irreplaceable files copied to a USB drive now, but I'd like to recover everything from the laptop and set up a better backup system.

It may work, but first check whether the storage in that exact Aspire 3 is removable. If it is, you could remove the drive and place it in a compatible USB enclosure, then connect it to another computer and copy your files without transplanting the entire Windows installation. Opening the laptop yourself is possible, but check a teardown guide for the A315-59-55KU and be careful not to damage the battery or connectors. Also, if BitLocker or another form of drive encryption is enabled, you may need the recovery key.

A drive swap between identical laptops has a good chance of working, and Windows is generally better than it used to be at adapting to new hardware. Still, make a backup before trying it. Your photos and documents are stored on the drive, but installed applications may require reactivation or reinstallation, and the Windows license may be tied to the original hardware. If the old laptop still powers on, you may also be able to connect it to an external monitor or television and copy the data that way.

You don’t necessarily need another Acer or the exact same model. Windows can often detect the new hardware and install the necessary drivers after moving a drive to another computer. However, it is not guaranteed to be trouble-free: different hardware can cause driver or activation issues, and you may need to reinstall some drivers or Windows. The safest approach is to connect the old drive externally and copy your files first, rather than immediately making it the replacement computer’s system drive.

So it could work with a different laptop too, but using the old drive externally would be the safer way to recover my files first?
