Can I move my Windows 11 SSD into a completely new PC build?

I'm replacing most of the hardware in my PC but want to keep using my existing 1 TB SSD, which contains Windows 11 and my game files. Can I simply install the drive in the new system, or should I take additional steps to avoid driver conflicts, activation problems, blue screens, or losing my files?

Windows activation can be affected when the motherboard changes. A retail license is generally transferable, while an OEM license may remain tied to the original system. If you use a Microsoft account, activation can often be restored through the activation troubleshooter, but you may still need the original product key or Microsoft support.

You can try moving the SSD directly, and Windows may boot and install the basic drivers automatically. However, a clean Windows installation is strongly recommended after a major motherboard and CPU change because leftover chipset, storage, network, and graphics drivers can cause problems. Back up anything important first so you can reinstall if needed.

The old installation might work perfectly, but it’s a gamble. Before switching, make sure you have backups and your BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled. After booting, remove the old graphics drivers and install the correct drivers for the new hardware. Your games may remain usable if their files and library locations are preserved, though some launchers or programs may need to be reinstalled or pointed back to the existing folders.

If you want the least risk and the cleanest result, install Windows fresh on the SSD after copying your important files elsewhere. You can then reconnect or scan the existing game folders instead of downloading every game again. Updating the BIOS is not normally necessary unless the new motherboard has a compatibility issue, so don’t flash it without a reason and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
