I'm trying to free up space on my system drive. If I copy the contents of the Program Files folder to another drive and then delete the original files, will that damage Windows or make my installed programs stop working? What is the safest way to reclaim space?

Don’t manually delete or move the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folders. Installed applications rely on registry entries, services, shortcuts, permissions, and file paths, so copying the files elsewhere usually won’t make them work from the new location and can break Windows or the applications. If you need more space, move personal files such as videos, downloads, and documents, or choose another drive as the install location for future games and applications.
Uninstall applications through Windows Settings or Control Panel instead of deleting their folders. It’s generally fine to remove installers, ISO files, and downloads after you no longer need them. Windows’ built-in storage cleanup tools can also remove temporary and unnecessary files safely.
If the system drive is too small, adding a larger SSD and cloning the old drive is a better solution than manually moving Program Files. Another option is to reinstall selected applications onto the other drive, provided the installer lets you choose a destination.

Thanks, that clears things up.
