Can I Pursue Both Medicine and Coding?

Hey everyone! I'm a 16-year-old high school senior and I'm really torn between two passions. I want to dive into medicine because I love the idea of helping people face to face, but I also have a strong interest in coding and the tech world. I originally thought about becoming a software engineer, but now I'm wondering if it's possible to do both medicine and coding. Should I learn coding during high school and focus on it in college while also pursuing medicine? How challenging would this be? Is it realistically doable?

Many people in medicine who know how to code tend to be involved in research, like biostatistics or epidemiology. I've even assisted an ER doctor with an algorithm, so there's definitely a crossover in some areas!

You can absolutely do both, but just heads upโmedical school is super time-consuming and pricey! If you go heavy on medicine, you'll have less time for coding. That said, you can still take some computer science classes in college and make programming a side hobby or even a lucrative extra income down the line. Thereโs definitely nothing stopping you from honing your coding skills.

Biomedical engineering is a great blend of medicine and coding if you're looking for a mix of both. Just keep in mind that if you aim to become a surgeon, you might not have much time for coding. It really depends on the specific path you want to take in medicine.

In some places, doctors actually earn less than programmers. Personally, I learned to code and switched gears entirely. It took me about three years, but if you're driven, you could definitely pull it off, too.

With how much AI is being integrated into healthcare nowadays, having both skills could be incredibly beneficial. Many universities even have programs focusing on data science in biology, which attract a lot of pre-med students. It wonโt be easy, but if you're keen, you should definitely give it a shot!
