Can I Query a Game Server to See How Many Players Are Connected?

I play Titanfall 2, and its regional multiplayer populations vary a lot depending on the time of day. When I select a region, the game shows a message like "Attempting connection (x of x)," and regions with more connection attempts often seem to have more active players. I'm new to programming and have learned how to ping servers. Is there a way to contact each regional server directly and retrieve information such as its current player or connection count?

The answer also depends on whether the game uses dedicated servers, peer-to-peer hosting, or a mixture of both. With dedicated servers, a player count is possible only if the server or matchmaking service chooses to expose it. With peer-to-peer connections, there may not be a central regional server with a reliable count at all.

Possibly, but it depends entirely on how the gameโ€™s backend is designed. You would need to find out whether Titanfall 2โ€™s servers expose a status or query protocol that reports player counts. If they do, you must send a correctly formatted request to the right address and port; a normal ping only tells you whether a host responds, not how many players are connected.

You may be able to learn how the game discovers regions and servers by observing your own network traffic with a tool such as Wireshark. That can show which hosts and ports the client contacts, although the traffic may be encrypted or use a proprietary protocol. Donโ€™t aggressively scan or send arbitrary requests to servers; first identify whether there is an intended status request.

Game servers sometimes provide this information through a documented status endpoint or a special server-query protocol. Older games were more likely to expose details such as maps, player lists, and connection counts, but many services stopped doing that because publicly accessible queries can be abused. Look for technical documentation or existing tools for the game, and make sure any testing follows the gameโ€™s terms of service.
