I reset my iPad because I was preparing to sell it, then set a temporary passcode while moving. Afterward, I couldn't remember the new passcode. I tried working through possible combinations, but the iPad eventually became permanently disabled. Since I had already reset it, I don't believe an Apple Account is currently associated with the device. I do have photos showing the settings, IMEI, and other device details, but I don't have the original purchase receipt because I bought the iPad secondhand several years ago. Can recovery mode or an Apple Store erase and restore it, or is the device permanently unusable?

If the issue is only the forgotten screen passcode, you can erase and restore the iPad by putting it into recovery mode and connecting it to a computer. This will delete anything still on the device, but it should let you set it up again afterward.
Apple may be able to help with an ownership or Activation Lock issue, but they generally require valid proof of purchase to remove that lock. A forgotten passcode is different: recovery mode can erase the iPad without needing the old passcode. After the erase, setup will reveal whether an Apple Account lock is actually present.
I bought it secondhand years ago, so I probably can’t provide the original receipt. Hopefully it’s only the passcode lock and a recovery restore is enough.

I was unsure whether recovery mode would work because some support pages made it sound like an Apple Account was required. I’m going to try the recovery instructions anyway—thanks!
