I tried updating the BIOS on my MSI MPG X570 Gaming Pro Carbon WiFi so my Ryzen 9 5900XT would meet the requirements for a new game. I started the update through MSI Center, but after the restart the system showed no display and none of the peripherals powered on. After waiting several minutes, I manually restarted it, and it has behaved the same way ever since.
The motherboard still powers on, and I tried using its Flash BIOS button with a BIOS file downloaded from MSI. The Flash BIOS LED blinks red, but the process does not seem to finish. The CPU EZ Debug LED also stays solid red.
I've heard this motherboard can be very particular about USB drives during Flash BIOS recovery, especially with some USB 3.x drives. Is it worth using a small USB 2.0 drive, and are there any specific formatting or file-naming steps I need to follow? Does the red CPU LED make sense after a corrupted BIOS update, or could the CPU itself be damaged? Since the board still responds to the Flash BIOS button, is recovery likely?

The solid CPU light doesn’t necessarily mean the processor is dead. If the BIOS update was interrupted, the board may simply be unable to complete POST or initialize the Ryzen 9 5900XT.
Try Flash BIOS recovery again before assuming the board is ruined. Use the BIOS version intended for this exact motherboard, rename the file to `MSI.ROM`, format a small USB drive as FAT32, and place only that file in the drive’s root directory. Make sure it is inserted into the dedicated Flash BIOS USB port.
These boards can be picky about USB drives, so a basic small USB 2.0 stick or card reader is worth trying. Start the flash and do not interrupt it; the LED should eventually stop blinking or turn off when the process is complete. Since the button and LED still respond, the motherboard is not necessarily bricked.
The CPU is probably fine. BIOS Flashback is designed to work without a CPU installed, so the process itself does not rewrite or damage the processor. A solid CPU debug LED can appear simply because the corrupted BIOS prevents the system from getting far enough through startup.
A successful Flash BIOS recovery will often bring the board back, although nothing is guaranteed. Let the flash finish completely instead of shutting the system down while the LED is blinking. Once the indicator has finished and the board has stopped working, you can power it off and start it again; don’t manually interrupt the update just because the computer appears inactive for a while.
Yes, trying a known-working, small USB 2.0 drive is reasonable. Keep the drive simple: FAT32, preferably MBR, with only the correctly renamed `MSI.ROM` file on it. Some systems are much less reliable with newer USB 3.x drives during flashback.
The BIOS update was likely prompted by newer security requirements such as Secure Boot and TPM support.
