Can I replace a cracked laptop lid cover near the hinge myself?

The plastic back cover of my laptop display lid is cracked near the left hinge. The display panel itself seems fine, but the damaged area can be pressed back into place and then pops up again when I open the lid. I'm concerned that the loose cover or hinge could put extra strain on the screen, display cable, camera wiring, or WiโFi antenna cables. I've handled repairs before, including replacing a WiโFi chip, installing an SSD, and changing buttons on handheld consoles. Is replacing just the outer lid cover a reasonable DIY repair, or would it be safer to have a professional do it? I'm trying to avoid the cost of professional service if possible.

As a temporary measure, you could secure the cracked area with a small amount of suitable adhesive, but donโt let glue get into the hinge or onto any cables. The hinge may be binding or pulling away from its mount, so avoid repeatedly opening and closing the lid until you can inspect it. Replacement is generally better than relying on glue, especially if the hinge itself is too tight.

Itโs worth repairing rather than leaving it loose. A damaged hinge mount can eventually stress or break the display, hinge hardware, or cables that run through the lid. The cleanest fix is usually replacing the rear lid cover or the damaged hinge mounting piece with the correct part for your laptop. It may require removing the bezel, display panel, and cable connections, so take photos during disassembly and work slowly.

MellowCedar47: I may use glue temporarily to reduce the strain, but Iโd prefer to replace the cover if that part is available. I wasnโt sure how difficult it would be to replace only the plastic shell.
SilverMaple21: That sounds reasonable as a short-term solution. Be especially careful around the hinge and any display, camera, or antenna wiring when opening the lid.
